Dr Hazland (second row, ninth from left) takes a group photo with the Top 30 finalists, judges, and JCI committee members. — Photo by Kentigern Minggu KUCHING (Aug 10): A total of 16 companies and organisations from Sarawak were shortlisted among the 30 finalists for the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Malaysia Sustainable Development Award 2025. They are Safewater Asia Sdn Bhd; Yong Yu Resources Sdn Bhd; JCI Riam; JCI Jalan Tanjung Kidurong; Sibu Municipal Council; ChampSpeak (Champs Education); Kuching South City Council (MBKS); Borsa Food Sdn Bhd (YourgutBB Kuching); Timuran Kembangan Sdn Bhd; Kuching Performing Arts Association; Layar Education Development Committee (LEDC); Angkatan Zaman Mansang (Azam) Sarawak; Persatuan Wind Orchestra Kuching (The Band Lab); Taka Patisserie; The Ranee Sdn Bhd; and a coalition between Nature Resource Solutions (NRS), Kuching Urban Farming (KUF) and MBKS. At a press conference held at the Borneo Cultures Museum here yesterday announcing the Top 30 finalists, Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni commended their efforts in creating tangible impact within their communities and inspiring others to follow suit. “Being shortlisted is no small feat — it represents months, if not years, of dedication, innovation and purpose-driven action. “This year’s theme – ‘Local Action, Global Impact’ – is particularly fitting as small local initiatives, when replicated across communities, can transform nations and drive global progress,” he said, adding he was encouraged to see many initiatives that aligned with the ministry’s vision for a greener, more inclusive and resilient Malaysia. “In Sarawak, for example, we are working to implement the Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint 2030 and the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap – long-term strategies that require not only policy direction but also the active participation of communities, businesses and change-makers like you,” he said. He urged JCI to focus on its future activities and programmes on key global megatrends and emerging risks such as climate change, economic uncertainty and the potential for future pandemics or biological threats. Other finalists from across Malaysia include Pertubuhan Amal Kebajikan En Xin Negeri Sembilan; Malaysian Society of Parasitology and Tropical Medicine; Mins Studio Sdn Bhd; Lim and Nyu Dental Surgery; Kiwanis Club of Muar; Stellar Education Group Sdn Bhd; Universiti Malaya; JCI Kuala Lumpur Mandarin; the Ban Ning Teh Society (1954) Malacca; Collaborative Excellence Sdn Bhd; Wellspring Buildtrade Sdn Bhd; Gemilang Coachwork Sdn Bhd; the Department of Fisheries Malaysia; and the Malaysian Palm Oil Green Conservation Foundation. All finalists had their project submissions evaluated by a panel of independent judges, and were selected from a pool of 65 participants. The winners will be announced at the Grand Award Ceremony on Sep 21 to be held at the Imperial Hotel Kuching from 5pm to 10pm. First held in 2017, the award aims to celebrate and recognise projects carried out by companies and non-governmental organisations in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Also present were 2025 JCI Malaysia national deputy president JCI Senator Vincent Leng; 2025 JCI Kuching local president Albert Loi Wang Shieng; and 2025 JCI Malaysia Sustainable Development Award organising chairwoman Bivi Ling Siew Chee.

SMC workers douse flames at the closed Seng Ling dumpsite. SIBU (Aug 10) The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) is working to contain the spread of an underground fire at the closed Seng Ling dumpsite here, said its chairman Clarence Ting. He confirmed that the fire has not yet been extinguished. “Will continue to fight the underground fire till it is over. Now (we are) only containing the spread,” he told The Borneo Post today when asked if the fire had been extinguished. On Friday, a check by The Borneo Post at the site found thick smoke billowing from the affected area. Ting had earlier said the dumpsite has been burning since July 30. “This dump site has been closed since 2010 for household waste and the land has been handed back to the Land and Survey Department,” he said then. He added SMC was working with Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) to permanently close the dumpsite and works should start by the end of the year.

Ting (seated centre) chairing the SMC full board meeting. Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has become the first local authority in Sarawak to launch a pilot project aimed at simplifying the process of business licence registration and licensing. This initiative, which began on Aug 1, is being carried out through the Urban Transformation Centre (UTC). SMC chairman Clarence Ting said at the council’s full board meeting that the project involved collaboration among several agencies, including UTC, District Office and Treasury office. Ting said the project introduced a streamlined process where business registration and licensing applications would now be channelled through the UTC, serving as a one-stop centre. “SMC will coordinate the applications. “Applicants need only fill up a single composite form at UTC,” Ting explained. A trial run was carried out at UTC Sibu to train staff ahead of the official launch. The pilot project also involves the Sibu Rural District Council and Kanowit District Council. This initiative is a move by Sarawak government to enhance administrative efficiency, speed and investor-friendliness, thereby boosting the state’s competitiveness as a leading investment destination. Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian was reported as saying that the pilot project targets a processing time, from application to licence collection, within 14 working days for low-risk businesses. “High-risk business applications, such as gas sales, entertainment centres, and childcare centres, will be processed within 30 working days,” said Dr Sim. ― By ANDY CHUA

SMC’s water trucks arrive at the closed Seng Ling dumpsite. – Photo by Peter Boon SIBU (Aug 7): Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has dispatched two water trucks to help extinguish a fire at the closed Seng Ling dumpsite. In a Facebook post today, SMC chairman Clarence Ting said the council continues to battle the fire at the closed dumpsite. “I have received feedback from the public that white smoke is spewing out and creating pollution in their neighbourhood. “SMC is on site to douse the fire since yesterday. We likely have to excavate the pile and then extinguish the underground fire,” he said. A check by The Borneo Post at the site found thick smoke billowing from the affected area, the size of the which had yet to be established. When contacted, Ting said the dumpsite has been burning since July 30. “This dump site has been closed since 2010 for household waste and the land has been handed back to the Land and Survey Department,” he said. He added SMC is working with Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) to permanently close the dumpsite and works should start by the end of the year. https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1806412729959973
