SIBU (Jan 15): Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) together with Sibu Health Office conducted a surprise inspection on two pork jerky production premises in the town last Tuesday.

According to SMC Public Health, Environment and Municipal Services Standing Committee deputy chairman Councillor Yiing Sy Huat, the inspection was carried out following public feedback on hygiene and product quality issues.

He said that of the two premises inspected, one in an industrial area was found to comply with hygiene standards while the other, which was run by a family, only carried out packaging and distribution.

“However, the hygiene conditions of the premises run by the family were found to be unsatisfactory and have been referred to Sibu Health Office for follow-up action.

“This inspection aims to ensure that the production and packaging of pork jerky meets hygiene requirements to ensure consumer safety,” he added.

Yiing also informed that last month, the health team inspected five pork jerky distributors around Sibu town.

The inspection results found that the quality of several products did not comply with standards including mouldy pork jerky at one of the shops, he said.

“Three of the distributors have been warned to improve the cleanliness of their products.”

For Tuesday’s inspection, the authorities also collected information regarding the location and operation of the premises from the distributors before taking further action.

“We do not intend to cause trouble to anyone, but this is for the health and safety of consumers,” Yiing said.

He thus hoped the operators will comply with hygiene regulations, especially in the process of grilling and packaging of smoked meat, to ensure that the products sold are safe to eat.
