SIBU (July 28): With the Hungry Ghost Festival just around the corner, in the seventh month of the Lunar calendar, the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) seeks all devotees who wish to give offerings by the roadside to fill in application forms obtainable from SMC.

SMC chairman Clarence Ting said the council takes the cleanliness issue seriously, citing an example of an incident in Bukit Lima last year where the offerings had caused an eyesore and produced stench to its surrounding areas.

SMC personnel are authorised to clear the offerings made without permit at the roadside, Ting said.

“Last year, people came to me and complained. Rotten food was all over and it was very smelly. I went there myself and it gave me a bad headache when I looked at it,” he said.

Ting expressed his hope that the public would cooperate with the council in order to keep Sibu clean and free from diseases.

“We are living in a multicultural society and not everybody celebrates this Ghost Festival. Those who are celebrating it, at least be respectable and keep the place clean,” he stressed.
