IF all goes to plan, the area around Kutien Memorial Garden will be transformed into a leisure park incorporating sporting facilities.

Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng, who forwarded the proposal to Sibu Municipal Council, said more could be done to transform the place.

“Around this area we have the memorial garden, Bukit Lima indoor stadium, open-air basketball and volleyball courts as well as a swimming pool.

“We can add more facilities to transform the place into a big leisure park,” he said at a mass clean-up campaign at the garden in Sibu town, Sarawak.

Chieng was optimistic that with ample land around the park, there was room to grow and add more facilities to attract visitors.

“I will support Sibu Municipal Council to transform the place,” he said.

Chieng also urged parents to bring their children to the park and participate in the clean-up.

“Currently, only Sarawak Kutien Association members are involved,” he said.

The annual campaign was suspended for two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The association had in 2003 adopted the Bukit Lima Garden and turned it into Kutien Memorial Garden.

The association’s history and key events are engraved in a special monument in the garden.
