MORE entertainment, cultural and sports events should be organised to enliven Sibu.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting said now that Malaysia was transitioning to the endemic phase, the council wished to see more new events, besides the Borneo Cultural Festival, Sibu International Dance Festival and Sibu Base Jump.

“This way, we will not have to go out of Sibu to see such events,” he told reporters during the launch of The Stage programme at Rejang Esplanade.

Ting assured that event organisers would be able to utilise SMC’s facilities.

He added that organising events all year round would also boost tourism in the district.

Ting commended Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng for taking the initiative to organise The Stage that had helped enliven Rejang Esplanade, which was built in 1988.

“Rejang Esplanade has been quiet for the last 10 to 20 years, and underutilised.

“We hope that in time, the whole esplanade can be utilised to accommodate more stalls and performances which will add value to the place.”

Fifteen groups showcased their talents during the two-day event.
