SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) will carry out five ‘gotong royong’ campaigns to clean the surroundings within a three-week period until April 18 in conjunction with Love Earth Day.
Its chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King said they would focus on several zones that are hotspots for dengue cases.
“We hope for the people’s cooperation in these cleanliness campaigns to nail down the potential breeding grounds of the Aedes mosquitoes.
“It should not involve the authorities alone as everyone has a responsibility to make the environment clean and mosquito free,” he said at the launch of a series of cleaning campaigns at SK Bandaran No.4 here yesterday.
Also present were SMC secretary Hii Chang Kee and organising chairperson Cr Rhoda Ting.
More than 170 persons including students and staff of University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS) and Woodlands International School took part in the Zone 14 cleanliness campaign yesterday.
Tiong stressed that the people should discard the habit of throwing rubbish indiscriminately.
He noticed when he was in Chengdu city, China recently that its people concerned about cleanliness and hygiene were responsible for the lack of litter in the city.
He hoped people here would not litter too as that would cause an eyesore and invite diseases.
A clean environment is appealing and makes tourists want to return for another visit, Tiong said.
