SIBU (Aug 7): Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has dispatched two water trucks to help extinguish a fire at the closed Seng Ling dumpsite.

In a Facebook post today, SMC chairman Clarence Ting said the council continues to battle the fire at the closed dumpsite.

“I have received feedback from the public that white smoke is spewing out and creating pollution in their neighbourhood.

“SMC is on site to douse the fire since yesterday. We likely have to excavate the pile and then extinguish the underground fire,” he said.

A check by The Borneo Post at the site found thick smoke billowing from the affected area, the size of the which had yet to be established.

When contacted, Ting said the dumpsite has been burning since July 30.

“This dump site has been closed since 2010 for household waste and the land has been handed back to the Land and Survey Department,” he said.

He added SMC is working with Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) to permanently close the dumpsite and works should start by the end of the year.
