SIBU (Aug 3): The Residents Councillorship System (RCS) programme, which will be implemented in 14 wards, aims to introduce each Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) councillor assigned to the respective wards.
SMC chairman Clarence Ting said each ward has two councillors responsible.
“For this ward (H), we have Councillor Rory Wong and Councillor Shirley Ling in charge,” he told reporters during the RCS Programme for Ward H that was held alongside the ‘Waste to Wealth Programme and Anti-Rabies Vaccination Programme’ at SMK Tung Hua yesterday.
The programme was organised by SMC in collaboration with the Department of Veterinary Services Sibu, Jalan Merdeka/Meritam village security and development committee, Tung Seng Enterprise, STP Trading and Timuran Kembangan.
Ting said after receiving funding, councillors in each ward will implement community-based projects in their respective areas.
“Now, I’m here because they invited me to come. Normally, I prefer not to attend because I want the local residents to get to know their ward councillors who are responsible for their area.
“So, if residents have any problems, they can go and speak to them, not me. We have 14 wards, and if I have to go to each one, I won’t have time to do other things.
“That’s why I encourage the councillors here to speak. Next time, if we have another event in this ward, Shirley will likely speak. We want the public to know who their ward councillors are — this is the real purpose of the RCS programme,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Wong in his speech said the programme reflects the power of collaboration among the community, including the council, school, JKKK, government agencies, private sector partners, and residents.
“Together, we can create positive change. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this effort. Let’s continue working together for a cleaner, safer, and stronger Sibu,” he said.
