SIBU (March 22): Seven locations in Sibu went dark from 8.30pm to 9.30pm tonight in observance of Earth Hour 2025, joining a global initiative to raise awareness of energy conservation and environmental sustainability.
The participating locations included Sibu Gateway, streetlights along Jalan Kampung Nyabor, Lin’s Clan Swan Garden, Sibu Central Market, Yu’s Dolphin Park, SMC Public Library, Jalan Kenari, and Jalan Bujang Suntong.
This year’s state-level Earth Hour was hosted by the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC), bringing together 23 local councils across Sarawak in a virtual programme in a unified effort to highlight the importance of protecting the environment.
Organising chairman Councillor Kevin Lau said it was SRDC’s first time hosting the event, with the goal of encouraging energy conservation and fostering greater environmental awareness.
Last Wednesday, Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley had urged Sibu residents, businesses, and organisations to participate by turning off non-essential lights at homes and workplaces during the designated hour.
He also encouraged the public to help spread awareness by sharing invitations and promotional posters, inspiring family, friends, and colleagues to support the global movement.
“It’s not just one hour—it’s the start of a movement towards global sustainability. Together, we can make a significant impact on the planet’s future,” he said.
