SIBU (March 19): Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has selected seven locations for Earth Hour 2025 on Saturday from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.

SMC deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley invited Sibu folk, businesses, and organisations to participate in the event by turning off non-essential lights at home or the office during this time.

He said the people can also help promote awareness through invitations and promotional posters, encouraging family, friends, and colleagues to join the global movement for the planet.

“Join us in creating the biggest hour for Earth on March 22 from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.

“It’s not just one hour. It is the start of a movement towards global sustainability. Together, we can make a significant impact on the planet’s future,” he told a press conference.

Izkandar said the seven locations which will go dark are Sibu Gateway, Jalan Kampung Nyabor street lights, Lin’s Clan Swan Garden, Sibu Central Market, Yu’s Dolphin Park, SMC Public Library, Jalan Kenari, and Jalan Bujang Suntong.

To engage with more members of the community, he said event organiser Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) will also provide ‘live’ Zoom links for selected locations where the lights will go off.

Other locations will also join the global movement by turning off their lights and participants will be able to connect virtually to witness the event unfold in real time.

“The ‘live’ broadcast will showcase the collective effort and commitment of the Sibu community towards environmental sustainability,” he said.

Izkandar stressed SMC is committed to environmental stewardship and promoting sustainability within the community.

By participating in Earth Hour 2025, he said the council hoped to inspire Sibu residents and businesses to act towards reducing their carbon footprint and protecting the environment for future generations.

“Let’s unite to tackle climate change. Participate in Earth Hour and send a powerful message to the world that we are ready to protect our planet,” he added.

Earth Hour is a global movement organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) where individuals, businesses, and governments come together to turn off non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness about climate change and environmental issues.

This year’s theme is `Create the Biggest Hour for Earth’.
