SIBU (March 7): The illegal practice of reserving public parking spaces by placing objects such as trash bins, traffic cones, and other obstructions is an offense, said Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley.

He emphasised that offenders will be issued compounds under the Local Authorities (Cleanliness) By-laws, 1999, specifically By-law 18(1)(b), which prohibits placing objects or obstructions in public areas.

“On March 5, the enforcement team from SMC conducted an operation and took action against parties misusing public parking spaces in the town center,” he said in a statement.

A total of seven compounds were issued at various locations: one at Jalan Khoo Peng Loong backlane, two at Jalan Channel, one at Jalan Bengkel, two at UTC Market, and one at Jalan Market.

Enforcement officers also confiscated objects placed in front of business premises to unlawfully reserve parking spaces, Izkandar added.

He stressed that such strict enforcement aims to ensure public parking remains accessible to all users without unfair restrictions.

“We remind all business owners and individuals to refrain from illegally reserving parking spaces,” he said.

He said the public can report such incidents to SMC via the SMC Cares app or WhatsApp to 019-8179297 for further action.
