SIBU (Feb 27): Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has been named champion in the Local Authority (City & Municipal Council) category at the 11th Premier of Sarawak Environmental Award (PSEA) 2023/2024 ceremony.

The award presentation took place at Imperial Hotel, Kuching on Jan 22, with SMC receiving a certificate, trophy, and a cash prize of RM10,000.

PSEA is a biennial award from the Sarawak government in giving recognitions to local authorities, organisations, and industries for their excellent achievements in environmental management and sustainability practices.

SMC chairman Clarence Ting, who was met after chairing the full council meeting here yesterday, described the feat as a ‘collective effort’ of the council and the people of Sibu.

“This award is held once every two years, and we competed against six other councils, including Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Kuching North City Council (DBKU), Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), and Miri City Council (MCC),” he said.

“During the ceremony, we were the last to be named and that’s when I realised SMC had won the champion title,” he said, in sharing his pride in the council’s proactive environmental conservation and waste management initiatives.

Among the environmental initiatives undertaken by the council, he said, were the Earth Hour and Love Earth Day, household waste recycling programmes, electronic waste recycling, composting practices, and tree planting activities.

“These initiatives ensure proper disposal of e-waste and organic waste, whereas the production of garbage enzymes and tree planting activities aim to further contribute to environmental preservation.

SMC also prioritises community engagement through collaborations with non-governmental organizations (NGOs), to promote environmental awareness and sustainable practices, he said.

“This recognition is for all of us in Sibu. We will continue to work hard with all stakeholders to make this town greener, cleaner, and more sustainable,” he said, while thanking all the Sibu folks, community leaders, government agencies, and NGOs for their support.
