SIBU (Feb 17): The Chiang Chuan Association has agreed to assess the cost of repairing the gazebo at Chiang Chuan Garden, which was damaged after a tugboat collided into it recently.
The estimated cost would be forwarded to the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) for further action.
SMC chairman Clarence Ting when contacted today said the council would then engage with the shipping company responsible for the incident to discuss compensation.
“We have filed a police report, gone through the necessary procedures and will now talk to the shipping company about the compensation,” he said.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian visited the site earlier today to inspect the damage and meet with representatives from the association, and his visit underscored the importance of restoring the gazebo and ensuring accountability for the damage.
Chiang Chuan Garden was built to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Hokkien settlement in the Rajang Basin.
The garden, funded by contributions from the association’s members, was later handed over to SMC. However, under an agreement, the association continues to manage and maintain the garden.
The tugboat incident also raised concerns about safety along the riverfront, with authorities expected to review measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
