SIBU (Dec 30): The state government has been urged to give serious consideration to developing a central sewage system for Sibu.

In making this call, Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting said the current discharge from the town directly enters into the Rajang and Igan rivers.

“We still don’t have a central sewage, so our discharge is directly into the Rajang River. In terms of health-wise, it is not very good.

“I think the state government should also prioritise Sibu to have this central sewage system, like (the ones) they are building in Kuching North and Kuching South. So far, there is no plan (for Sibu).

“This is something that we need to do in the coming year. We should request the state government to look into seriously central sewage system for us in Sibu.

“This way, the discharge will not flow directly into the Rajang River or the Igan River. The reason is very simple,” Ting said when asked to clarify a point he highlighted during the full council meeting earlier today.

Ting further observed that the river is increasingly being utilised for leisure activities, stressing on the importance for the river to be kept clean.

Also in attendance at the full council meeting were SMC deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley and secretary Yong Ing Chu.
