SIBU (Nov 29): Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) is calling for the installation of more charging stations here in a bid to get more electric vehicles (EVs) on the road to reduce carbon emissions.
Speaking at the grand opening of Regas EV Auto Sibu and BYD Sealion 7 launch here today, SMC chairman Clarence Ting lamented that there are not many EVs in Sibu due to the insufficient number of charging stations.
“Today, I’m sending a message out. For those people who want to install all these charging stations at SMC multi-storey parks, please come and see me.
“I will welcome them with open arms. That is important towards meeting this challenge to reduce emissions from ICE (internal combustion engine) cars.
“Without additional charging stations in Sibu, we are not going to get more EV cars. I hope that Regas will work with us. You point us the way – SMC can install them in our multi-storey car parks,” he said, adding Sarawak Energy Berhad will be installing three charging stations here.
On another note, Ting informed that SMC aims to turn Sibu into a smart city and have already installed nearly 4,000 light-emitting diode (LED) streetlights in areas under its jurisdiction.
He also spoke on efforts to prolong the lifespan of the landfills through the waste-to-wealth programme, and the collaboration with Unicef on Child-Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI).
