SIBU (Nov 28): The contestants for Sibu Municipal Council’s (SMC) Christmas Festival 2024 have started putting up their Christmas trees and decorations at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 1 here.

The 10 corporate companies participating in the annual tree-decorating competition have until Dec 5 to complete their setup, said festival organising chairman Councillor Simon Wee.

With a ‘Fairytale Christmas’ theme, he said the Christmas trees would be judged based on their ‘wow’ factor, presentation and creativity, innovative ‘musical design’, as well as durability and sustainability.

“The first round of judging will start on Dec 6, where there will also be a symbolic lighting-up ceremony on the same day at 7pm, followed by the second and final round of judging on Dec 24,” he said.

Wee added that a castle over 30 feet tall will also be constructed at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 1 as the festival’s centerpiece.

He said a number of exciting activities will take place at Phase 1 of the square from Dec 17 to 25, including performances by local churches from Dec 18 to 25, while Phase 2 will host a food fair from Dec 13 to 31.
