SIBU (Nov 16): The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has installed over 3,000 light-emitting diode (LED) streetlights in areas under its jurisdiction, setting the record for the most installations in Sarawak.
SMC chairman Clarence Ting pointed out that the record surpassed the one previously held in Kuching, which has 800 LED streetlights installed.
“Every year, SMC strives forward and innovates to make Sibu a better place; thus, the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principle is very much embedded in us.
“We will keep doing this in order to save energy for our town and SMC’s energy bills, which will free up funds for further important endeavours,” he said when officiating at the ‘SMC Innovation, Integrity cum Meet The Customer Day’ at Wisma Sanyan here today.
Ting also said the SMC would strengthen its public relations to better facilitate the people, so that they could be directed to the right channel.
“We shouldn’t tell them ‘this is not under SMC (jurisdiction); that is not my problem’.
“I want the public to know that even if the issue is not under our jurisdiction, we can still offer help,” he said, adding that the ‘Open Day’ programme was a good chance for SMC to share with everyone some of the problems that the council had encountered.
The event featured talks by two speakers: Noraini Abu Bakar from the Sarawak Integrity and Ombudsman Unit (Unions), and Azrol Adenan, a psychology officer from Sibu Prisons.
