SIBU: The new Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) building will be put on hold until the Bukit Assek Redevelopment Master Plan is completed, said Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee.

According to the Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Development, the Bukit Assek Redevelopment Plan will involve massive projects that will change the whole town; hence, every development plan needs to coordinate with the plan.

“We will continue to work together. We are waiting for Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s master plan for Bukit Assek redevelopment because that will take Sibu to a new level.

“So, everything will have to coordinate with that redevelopment plan master plan,” he said when asked by reporters about the current update of the SMC building.

The Pelawan assemblyman was met by reporters after the SMC Santai Raya celebration at the Islamic Complex here last night (May 2).

Previously, during the SMC Chinese New Year (CNY) open house on Feb 17, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian had said Abang Johari had approved an allocation of RM70 million for the building.

“It’s not just a building, office, or landmark. The council building that we are going to construct will be equipped with various facilities for the public.

“The facilities include lecture theatres and meeting rooms where the public can enjoy instead of just coming to pay their bills,” Dr Sim said.
