A coffee maker was sent to the ewaste collection campaign.
Sibu residents are producing domestic waste at a rate that is filling up Kemuyang sanitary landfill too quickly, according to the local authority.
“Cell One of the landfill has already reached its capacity,” said Sibu Municipal Council chairman Clarence Ting.
He said Cell Two was anticipated to last 10 years but the current rate of disposal meant it already looked as if it had reached the eighth-year capacity.
“In 2024, we might have to open up Cell Three,” he said after launching a wealth and ewaste collection event at Zion Methodist Church.
He urged residents not to throw everything out as the items would end up at the landfill.
He added that some items could be sold to recycling companies.
Ting used a coffee maker that was taken to the event for disposal as an example, saying that it could be reused or sold.
He also observed that some residents filled their compounds with many unwanted items.
“Many house gardens are very dirty with rubbish.
“We want community leaders to encourage people to sell recyclable goods or give the items to those who need them.”
