SIBU: Following the success of the recently concluded Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) 2023, the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) is gearing up to plan for more exciting year end programmes for Sibu.

It will organise Food Street Sibu, Christmas celebration and the New Year 2024 Countdown slated to begin on Dec 15 to make Sibu livelier and to attract people from around the Sarawak Central Region to come and visit the town.

The council's chairman, Clarence Ting Ing Horh, said the events will be held at the Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang here.

"State performances will be held during the weekend. Just like BCF, we anticipate many people from around the Central Region will come," he told reporters after chairing the SMC Full Council Meeting here today.

Thousands of people turned up for BCF 2023 that was held between July 14 and 23 for people to come and enjoy food and cultural activities.

He acknowledged that one of the attracting factors was the Kumang BCF Competition at the Dayak Pavilion of the BCF.

"Many people had come from outside of Sibu to support the contestants of the beauty contest," he said.

Ting said the young generation in Sibu are longing for a livelier town while hoping that the year end events will become another avenue for them to enjoy themselves.

He added that another BCF will be held in mid-August to coincide with the international level Participatory Design Conference (PDC) 2024 organised by University of Technology Sarawak (UTS).

The 10-day conference will gather about 500 international and national researchers, academicians, stakeholders, and local communities from multidisciplinary fields who are interested to jointly explore progress in issues and challenges related to social and communication technology and take an in-depth look at issues of the last decade such as communication infrastructure, rural communities, and poor neighbourhoods.

The organising of BCF during that time will give the participants of the conference themed 'Reaching Out: Connecting Beyond Participation' the opportunity to visit and explore interesting places in Sibu. --BERNAMA
