SIBU: The temporary closure of Sibu Central Market has been extended to Feb 19 due to an increase in Covid-19 cases at the premises, Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting has said.

The popular market was closed on Feb 8, and supposed to reopen yesterday.

In a press release on Saturday, Ting said the extended closure period was decided after reports from Sibu Division Health Office informed about the increase in positive cases detected in the market.

“The council’s top priority is the health and safety of all
the hawkers and the public at large.

“SMC has also decided that all hawkers at the market must undergo the mandatory Covid-19 screening at the nearest government clinic or at the Health Ministry’s drive-thru facility at Pustaka Negeri, Sibu,” he said.

Ting added that the council would review the operation status of Sibu Central Market upon receiving the swab test results of all its hawkers.

The popular market houses more than 1,100 hawkers.
