SIBU: For the first time there will be no display of fireworks in Sibu when the people welcome the New Year tomorrow night.

The yearly countdown to the new year, which is traditionally organised by Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), normally attracts a huge crowd of revellers at the town square.

It will not take place this year as the Covid-19 pandemic has worsened.

SMC Chairman Clarence Ting on Wednesday (Dec 30) said the public could, however, witness the state-level Countdown 2021 on Sarawak TV on Astro Channel 122.

"There is no countdown in other towns this year. For the state, the only one will be in Kuching which is organised by the Tourism Ministry.

"The public can tune in to watch it on Sarawak TV," he said.

As for those who will be celebrating it on their own, he advised them to be smart and not be complacent as the coronavirus was still rampant.

"In celebrating countdown 2021, do not be complacent by not wearing a face mask or sanitising our hands. Don't think that we can go about like any other pre-Covid days.

"I hope people will follow my advice and stay safe," he said.
