YB Datuk Chairman highlighted the following issues :

1.

Sibu Tower Run 2017

YB Datuk Chairman disclosed that the first Sibu Tower Run was one of the events for Visit Sibu Year 2017.  It had been successfully organized  by DNA Sports and Sin Chew Daily on 11 March 2017

A total of 217 participants throughout Sarawak had participated in the event. He congratulated the winners and expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Organizing Committee, in particular, the Event Co-organizer, Cr Wong Hie Ping and Event Coordinator, Cr Anna Lau King Hoong. He also expressed his appreciation to the public for full support and encouragement in making the event a great success.

 

2.

Strict Enforcement on Illegal Structures

Lately, it has been observed that there is a rise on illegal structure cases. Illegal structures at residential area were rampant and may contribute to certain risks and hazards that affected the safety of occupants. 

He reminded the public to strictly adhere to the Building By-law by obtaining Council’s approval before constructing any structures to the existing building. He also urged the   public to co-operate with Council to ensure the safety of occupants.  Council’s enforcement team was on routine inspection to identify those illegal structures being constructed without prior approval from Council.

 

3.

Borneo International Remote Control Power Boat Tournament

In conjunction with Visit Sibu Year 2017, Borneo International Remote Control Power Boat Tournament would be held at Lake Garden at Permai from 28 to 30 April 2017.  119 participants had enrolled themselves to participate in the tournament whereby 439 units of boats would be involved.  It is anticipated that this event would attract a huge crowd from the locals and power boat enthusiasts from all over the world.

The event received great response not only from local power boat racers but also attracted participants from West Malaysia and internationally.  Confirmed participants were from Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand, America and Dubai. Public were welcomed to join the fun and witness themselves the incredible power boats tournament.

 

4.

Visit By Yang Berhormat Datuk Prof. Dr Sim Kui Hian, Minister of Local Government, Sarawak

On 22 February 2017, Council has the great honour of receiving Yang Berhormat Datuk Prof. Dr Sim Kui Hian, Minister of Local Government, Sarawak on his first official visit to Sibu Municipal Council after his appointment. 

Various issues were discussed, from the development of Sibu to the management of this Council.  From the visit, hopefully strong rapport between Council and the Minister shall bring wonderful work relation harmony in ensuring the best service delivery to the community.  Apart from that, Council had raised-up some proposal on amendment of the current obsolete By-laws and policies. The Minister agreed to review the existing By-laws which had exceeded 20 years in order to identify the relevancy, particularly in implementation and efficiency of such law.
