YB Datuk Chairman highlighted the following issues :

1.

Borneo International Remote Control Power Boat Tournament 2017

YB Datuk Chairman announced that the Borneo International Remote Control Power Boat Tournament 2017, had been successfully organized by Sibu Municipal Council and Sibu Remote Control Power Boat Association at Permai Lake Garden from 28 to 30 April 2017; in conjunction with Visit Sibu Year 2017.

A total of 650 boats with participants from all over the world such as Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Brunei, Dubai, United States of America and also Malaysia have participated in the event. The Indonesian Team won the Team Challenge Tournament Cup (the grand prize).

SMC together with co-organizer Sibu Remote Control Power Boat Association have been listed in the Malaysia Book of Record for having the most number of remote control race boats in a single event, breaking the record held by Malacca back in 2015.

He congratulated the winners for their winning prizes and the Organizing Committee for a job well done in organizing the event. He also expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the public especially to the surrounding neighbourhood for their support, encouragement and kind hospitality throughout the event.

2.

Compounds and Over-parking Payments Through Paybills Malaysia

YB Datuk Chairman disclosed that the public could make payments for compounds and over-parking through online Paybills Malaysia. That was part of Council's initiative to ease the said payments for public's convenience as online payment could be done anywhere and anytime. He encouraged the public to make online payment to save their time and cost.

3.

Actions Against Developers and Consultant Engineers for Work Failures

With effect from 1 June 2017, developers and consultant engineers would be fully responsible on engineering works newly handed over to the Council.

Council would forward the Board of Engineering Malaysia (BEM) and the Ministry of Local Government and Housing (MLGH) against relevant developers and engineers relating to those failures cases done not in accordance with the approved engineering plan.

4.

Anti-littering Campaign

Littering has become a never-ending issue. Civic mindedness, consideration and tolerance are some of the values taught in school ever since the establishment of education system. However, there are still some who do not have the conscience to consider how their behaviours would affect others around them. The same law applies to every country in the world, which is no littering. Obviously most of us when we travel to another country, we abide by that rule. But why do we do it in our own country, or our own place where we call our home? Why can't we have the same attitude of no littering in Sibu?

Lenient approaches such as campaigns on anti-littering in schools, low offence compound fee, "No Plastic Bag" policy and others seem to have low impact on the society's attitude towards littering. Therefore Council has decided to impose heavier compound fee of RM500.00 with effect from 1 July 2017, a stricter and heavier penalty for litterbugs. CCTVs will be used to identify those litterbugs following the stern punishment. With more stringent punishment and enforcing, we hope that the Sibu we all love will always have a clean image.

5.

Hawkers at Sibu Central Market

As a local from Sibu, I am proud to comment that we have one of the largest and most popular one-stop dry and wet markets in Malaysia. Sibu Central Market attracts not only buyers but also sellers of local produce from near and far. Varieties of local food, produce and also some handicrafts can be found at Sibu Central Market, which makes it a must-stop place for tourists or locals coming from outside Sibu area.

The market also has a food court section whereby hawkers of different races and background offer an assortment of local delicacies that may only be available in Sibu. Tables and chairs are provided for the public and they are free to sit and order from any stalls they like. Therefore, hawkers are strictly warned not to restrict any customers from choosing their tables and seats as it will affect the warm hospitality. Council wishes to portray through the "free-sitting concept". Hawkers committing such behavior will be at risk of having their licence suspended.

Council has suspended some licensees at Sibu Central Market before due to inappropriate behavior towards the customers. This action serves as an example of Council's seriousness towards the matter.

6.

Illegal Extensions

Council has found that through  inspection exercise, there is a rise of illegal extensions offence cases of late. Any building extensions should seek prior approval from the Council.  Those found committing the offences, legal actions would be taken against them. Therefore, all building owners are advised to seek proper approval from the Council before they proceed with the works to avoid legal actions against them in the future.
