YB Datuk Chairman highlighted the following issues :

1.

Anti-littering Campaign

With effect from 1 July 2017, Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) had started to compound the offenders who were caught littering within the Council’s jurisdiction at the compound rate of RM500.00. CCTVs were also used to identify those litterbugs. Offenders would  be published in the local newspapers for awareness of public that SMC was really taking stern action against litterbugs.  Whistle-blowers with supporting concrete evidences about the offenders would be rewarded by SMC and their identities to be kept confidential.

Up to 23.7.2017, the total number of compounds issued was 46 whereby only 16 of them paid the compound fee.  Failure to comply with such By-law  and/or refuse to pay the compound fee would have to face court action. The implementation of RM500.00 compound was vital as an effort to deter the acts of littering including throwing the rubbish from the car windows or under the drain cover or dumping bulk refuse under the trees or at CBD areas.

Residents were advised to put out the rubbish during the scheduled collecting days and hours to ensure a clean environment.  By imposing more severe fine and stricter enforcement, hopefully Sibu could attain the target of zero litter town.  Thus become a pleasant and livable town apart from educating and inculcating the culture of collective responsibility to keep the town clean.

Advice To Keep Pets Within House Compound

In view of the recent incident of rabies disease outbreak,  YB Datuk Chairman advised the public to take preventive measures by ensuring that their pets were kept within their own house compound.  He reminded the members of public not to bring back pets from declared rabies infected areas and to seek medical treatment if bitten by dogs or cats.  Council had put in efforts for an on-going dog catching activity and public could contact SMC for any request to catch stray dogs within their vicinity.

Based on the record, Council had caught a total number of 693 dogs in 2015, 351 in 2016.  For 2017, 366 dogs were impounded since the beginning of the year until 25 July 2017.  For the month of July from 1 to 25 July 2017, Council had impounded a total of 110 dogs.  Members of public were advised to apply for dog licence from the Council.  As to-date, the number of dogs licensed with the Council  is only 97.  Therefore, he appealed  to every dog owners to be responsible for their pets and get them licensed.
