[Mesyuarat Penuh Majlis]

YB Datuk Chairman highlighted the following issues :

1.

Assessment Bill Payment for 2017

I wish to encourage and remind the public who have not paid their assessment bills to do so by 30 November 2017. Payment can be made at SMC counter in UTC Sibu or online through Paybills Malaysia. There will be no reduction or write-off of outstanding fees and surcharges as directed by Ministry of Local Government and Housing. Any requests will not be entertained. Therefore, the public’s kind cooperation regarding this matter is highly sought and appreciated. For information, the Council’s assessment rate collection as at 24th November 2017 is  92.43%.

2.

Indiscriminate Waste Disposal

In ensuring a safe and clean Sibu for sustainable living and healthy society, Council has initiated a number of campaigns towards green living. However, full cooperation from the public is the major success factor in order to achieve the said objective. As has been observed lately, indiscriminate disposal of refuse, bulky waste and construction and demolition waste have been very rampant. Therefore, Council wishes to advise the public to stop doing so. For information, Seng Ling’s dumping ground is open for public to dispose off their bulky waste. Scavenging contractors are not going to remove any bulky waste thrown by the public.

3.

Progression of Upgrading Works of Night Market (Pasar Malam)

Upgrading works of existing Pasar Malam trading site at the Butterfly Garden has started and traders were re-located to a temporary site of the previous Pasar Malam at Market Road car park along Market Road and High Street on 1 November 2017. The upgrading works are done to resolve some shortcomings at the current site such as lacking of proper drainage system, stagnant water after heavy downpour and lighting system. The works are expected to finish within 10 weeks but currently is behind schedule due to bad weather condition. Council is working hard to get the works done as scheduled so that everyone including traders and customers may be able to benefit and enjoy the newly upgraded Pasar Malam trading site.

4.

Prohibition of Driving on Newly Tar-sealed Backlanes

Backlanes are constructed to provide safe pathway for pedestrians to walk far from the busy road. Therefore, I wish to advise the public not to drive their vehicles (especially small vehicles that can fit in the backlanes such as motorcycles and bicycles) into the newly tar-sealed back lanes. This misconduct endangers the pedestrians and damages the lanes.

5.

Borneo Talent Awards 2017 (BTA 2017)

The recently concluded Borneo Talent Awards 2017 has definitely achieved its goal in discovering unique, outstanding talents apart from promoting Sibu in conjunction with Visit Sibu Year 2017 programme. The Grand Finale was successfully held on 25th November 2017 and the “Talent Star of the Year Award” was won by Mary Camela Rex Clement from Kuching. I wish to congratulate all winners from each categories and I hope that this event becomes their stepping stone towards achieving more success in their respective fields. I also wish to congratulate and thank the organising committee headed by Cr. Wong Hie Ping on the success of the seventh edition of BTA.

6.

The coming event is the seventh edition organised by Razz Chopper Malaysia with support from SMC. Anugerah Menteri Kerajaan Tempatan dan Perumahan (AMKTPH) 2017

It is with great pleasure that I wish to inform that Council has nominated two communities or NGOs for Anugerah Menteri Kerajaan Tempatan dan Perumahan 2017 (SMART Community) which gives recognition to local communities on their works in making a positive change and development within the society with Council’s support.

The NGOs are Persatuan Masyarakat Taman Li Hua and Tzu Chi Taiwan Buddhist Association. I wish to congratulate both for their hard work in contributing to the betterment of the people of Sibu and also for obtaining SILVER–RM5000.- (Tzu Chi Taiwan Buddhist Association) and BRONZE-RM3000.- (Persatuan Masyarakat Taman Li Hua) Awards from the Minister of Local Government and Housing during the event held on 21 November 2017. I hope that both associations will continue their noble works. Their achievements shall encourage other communities to  participate in the competition next year.
