Ting (right) witnessing how the Aedes traps operate. Health Ministry has set up 110 units of Aedes mosquito auto dissemination trap devices at Sibu Central Market, Sarawak, as a measure to prevent dengue cases. “Our central market is the first in the state to be approached by the ministry for the placement of the device which cost RM36 each,” said Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting. The device is designed to bait Aedes mosquitoes searching for a place to lay eggs. After coming into contact with the insecticide inside these traps, the contaminated adult mosquitoes will carry the insecticide and spread it to other breeding sites, killing larvae there. According to Ting, the device had been proven to reduce dengue cases in peninsular Malaysia. “There are six reported dengue cases in Sibu so far this year. “We will try to reduce dengue cases. “If this (device) is successful, we will bring it to SMC’s other markets in April,” said Ting. Similarly, he said he would encourage residents to instal the device in their homes if it is proven effective.
